City Opposes Valero Pipeline and Storage Facility

On August 3, The City of Hutto met with representatives of Valero regarding their desire to house an oil pipeline and storage facility near the Hutto landfill. “The City of Hutto is opposed to this proposal and has voiced its opposition to the proposed project and requested Valero consider alternative sites outside of Hutto, its ETJ, and growth areas,” said Mayor Doug Gaul.

The City is in opposition to the oil storage and terminal project as this use does not fit within our comprehensive plan for this growth corridor. We are also concerned about the location and its proximity to residential subdivisions such as San Gabriel River Estates off of 131 and 1660, and the new high school and middle school planned to be built off of 1660. Furthermore, we believe that the amount of truck traffic and potential for future hazardous spills can have an adverse affect to the quality of life for those residents as well as our children who will be attending the new schools.

The City has been working with other governmental entities in addressing the issues raised by the proposed development.

Specifically, the city is opposing the Valero Pipeline and Storage Facility in the following ways:
1. Contesting the permit with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality
2. The City is presenting a joint resolution to Council from the City of Hutto and Hutto ISD, opposing the proposed Valero Distribution and Storage facility and the 70 mile pipeline project
3. The Hutto Emergency Service District will be requiring Valero to provide fire suppression on the proposed site; and
4. The City of Hutto will begin taking action to annex Hutto future growth areas to prevent something like this from happening again in the future.

Citizens who would like to stand with the City in opposition to the Valero Distribution and Storage Facility and the 70 mile pipeline project, should email eliska.smith@huttotx.gov and detailed information will be provided.
