On April 5, at the Texas Library Association conference in Dallas, the Hutto Public Library was recognized as one of the 48 recipients of 2018 Texas Book Festival Grants. The library was awarded $1500. Book selections for the grant are from the Tejas Star Reading List, popular junior fiction series, new and upcoming published books including non-fiction to bring current topics to patrons.

A reception will be held on Tues., May 29 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Hutto Public Library at 205 West St. During the reception, the library will host a special bilingual story time with special guest Alicia Roldan, an English as Second Language (ESL) and Spanish language instructor.

The Texas Book Festival awards grants to enhance the collection for Texas public libraries. This funding enables libraries to share the diversity and breadth of literature with their entire communities. Funding comes from book sales at the Texas Book Festival and other generous donors.

Since 1996, the Texas Book Festival has funded 1,121 grants totaling nearly $3 million to 600+ libraries in every corner of the state.

The Hutto Public Library serves a growing diverse community and will use this grant to provide bilingual and Spanish material for the citizens of Hutto. This grant will allow the library to introduce early literacy to children of diverse backgrounds. The library will be able to expand its collection of fiction and non-fiction books for children and junior collections. Increasing books in these collections will assist with the dual language elementary schools, and the middle and high schools which host English as a Second Language/English Language Learners classes to develop students’ literary skills.

By supporting the school district with books for children and families, the Hutto Public Library is able to encourage parents with diverse backgrounds to read to their children. The library also hosts Adult ESL and Basic Spanish classes for adults and homeschool kids.

The library encourages adults in ESL or Basic Spanish class to bring their children to the library and Texas Book Festival Grant will provide the Hutto Public Library the opportunity to provide fresh and updated literature for the families to build necessary literacy skills and develop a love of reading.
