For the first time in seven years, Jonah Water Special Utilities District (SUD) customers within City of Hutto boundaries will see an increase in their monthly sewer rate. The increase of $13.95/month will go into effect March 1, 2024.
In 2018, the City of Hutto and Jonah SUD negotiated an agreement to transfer Certificates of Convenience and Necessity (CCN) for a few neighborhoods north of Limmer Loop; a CCN is what identifies the organizations responsible for providing and maintaining specific utility services.
The updated CCN transferred the following north-side neighborhoods out of the Jonah SUD and into the City of Hutto for wastewater services:
- Hutto Highlands
- Hutto Highlands North
- Wilco Ranch
- Mustang Creek
- Emory Crossing
- Carol Meadows (Section 2)
Customers living in the affected area were initially notified by mail in July 2022 of a potential rate increase. The proposed transfer was approved by the Public Utility Commission of Texas in November 2022. Since then, the City of Hutto and Jonah SUD have been negotiating updates to their billing agreement.
Last week (Dec. 14, 2023), the Hutto City Council voted to set the new sewer rate, which will increase the affected customers’ current retail rate of $46.43/month to a new rate of $60.38/month. This increase of $13.95/month will go into effect March 1, 2024. The last rate increase for Jonah SUD sewer customers within Hutto city limits was back in March 2017.
The approved rate increase will effectively level-out the monthly rate that all City of Hutto wastewater customers pay for sewer service.
The CCN transfer will not affect water or billing services, and it will not cause any interruption in sewer/wastewater services. The City of Hutto Public Works Department will assume wastewater maintenance of the new service area. Jonah SUD will continue to bill for services and remit payment to the City of Hutto.
