[ARCHIVED] Be Ready! It's National Emergency Preparedness Month

For National Emergency Preparedness Month this September, the City of Hutto will share critical information with the Hutto community.

It's vitally important that every household in Hutto takes steps in advance to prepare for the next potential disaster. Winter storm Uri, the pandemic, and other recent disasters have not-so-gently reminded everyone how important it is to BE READY! The City is focusing on one key step each week this month:

Week One:  Make a Plan

Have a plan to communicate and meet during an emergency. Make sure all members of your family are aware of the plan and practice it. Consider what emergencies could happen where you live, such as floods, tornadoes, hard freezes, or even man-made incidents. What is your plan if you aren't together when disaster strikes? How will you let loved ones know you are safe? Make sure everyone in your home knows exactly how you’ll contact one another, and how you'll reconnect if separated. Establish a family meeting place that’s familiar and easy to find. Be sure to keep everyone's abilities in mind. For more helpful info, visit https://www.ready.gov/plan.

Week Two: Build a Kit

Pack essential items in an easy-to-carry container, including water (a gallon per person, per day, for everyone in your family for at least three days); non-perishable food; flashlights and batteries; personal hygiene items; copies of important documents; basic first aid items, extra cash; pet leashes and food; and any medical supplies.

Week Three: Know Your Neighbors

Emergency preparedness requires the whole community to participate. Knowing your neighbors in Hutto is a simple step that can truly help when an emergency strikes! When the whole community comes together to respond to and help recover from these emergencies - neighbor helping neighbor - we can often meet the needs of everyone. A great way to better know your neighbors is to participate in National Night Out on Tuesday evening, Oct. 5, whether in your own neighborhood or at Hutto's city-wide celebration at Brushy Creek Amphitheater.

Last Week: Stay Informed

Register with Warn Central Texas, the regional emergency notification system, and learn what safety issues or disasters are approaching or occurring in the Hutto region. Also important is following the City of Hutto on social media, signing up to receive the City e-newsletter, Hey Hutto; and tuning in to local news stations during an emergency.
