[ARCHIVED] #SmallBusinessWeek Spotlight: Finding Balance Yoga

A desire to own a business and create something of her own, combined with a background in accounting and years of training, led Sandra Moreland to open Finding Balance Yoga earlier this year. Offering group and private yoga classes and sessions as well as group barre classes and educational workshops, Finding Balance Yoga is located in the heart of Historic Downtown Hutto.

Moreland balances ownership of her yoga studio with a full-time job in the accounting and payroll industry, a background that played a major role in launching her own small business.

“For 24 years, I have worked for small- to medium-sized businesses performing accounting and payroll functions,” she said. “Having worked in accounting for so long, I’m a numbers person and knew going into this that there is a financial risk that could work out either positively or negatively.”

Inspired by her own journey in health and fitness, Moreland first became a certified personal trainer, then hired a personal nutrition coach before ultimately becoming one herself. Her educational training continued in 2015, when she enrolled in a coaching program from Precision Nutrition then a nutrition and fitness program designed specifically for women called Girls Gone Strong.

“In early 2020 I enrolled in a yearlong coaching program with Precision Nutrition’s top coaches and learned more about psychology, nutrition, sleep, stress, environment, and how all of that combined affects our deep health,” she said.

With this training, the ultra-busy mother of teenagers began as an online coach but really craved the face-to-face interactions that help build deeper relationships with her clients. Following schooling to become a yoga trainer, Moreland began putting her education into practice by teaching in Round Rock.

“In 2021, my husband and I began talking about opening a studio in Hutto where I, and others, could teach yoga and eventually offer coaching,” she said. “We began to look at spaces around Hutto and there were a few prospects, but the space at 117 East Street was a building I had been drawn to for awhile and it just worked.”

Already experiencing success, Finding Balance Yoga will soon expand into offering coaching for self-care, including information on nutrition, movement, stress management, sleep and many other tools for finding balance within.

Moreland’s advice to those making the leap into entrepreneurship is to do just that – make the leap.

“Don’t wait until you’re ready because you may never be ready,” she recommends. “Take the steps you need – learn, plan, fail, learn from the failures, get back up and try again. It may not be an easy or quick process. There will be ups and downs, just keep going and in time it will all come together.”
