History of Adam Orgain
In 2021, the Hutto City Council officially named this parkland Adam Orgain Park. Mr. Orgain was an African American man born into slavery in Tennessee in 1837 and taken to Texas. In 1854, at the age of 17, he became the first settler in Hutto when he was placed to watch over his enslaver’s ranching and cattle interests in this area. In the same timeframe of learning of his freedom on Juneteenth of 1865, Mr. Orgain married Eveline. Fifteen years later, Mr. Orgain purchased five acres of land for their home near Cottonwood Creek for $125, where he and Mrs. Orgain continued to raise their family. In 1893, Mrs. Orgain passed away and Mr. Orgain sold the homestead, eventually leading to the creation of Hague Street, Orgain Street and Walker Street. Mr. Orgain passed away in Hutto in 1902. It is in his honor as the first settler of our town that Adam Orgain Park is named.
