In order to facilitate the reconstruction of the road, FM685 was under construction starting October 1, 2014.  The Road was under construction thru August 2016.  Local access was maintained for addresses and businesses along FM685 from 79 to Great Western.  TxDOT will be the lead on the project. The FM 685 project was approved in 2012. The FM 685 from US 79 to SH 130 project improved and widened portions of the roadway and raised the bridge across Brushy Creek to lessen the possibility of flooding, and improve mobility within the city of Hutto. The project included: Widening sections of FM 685 from a four-lane undivided roadway to a four-lane divided roadway; Replacing the old bridge over Brushy Creek with two separate bridges, one northbound and one southbound;The northbound bridge consists of two 12-foot travel lanes; the southbound bridge consists of two 12-foot travel lanes and a left-turn lane to access Riverwalk Drive; Each bridge has a four-foot inside shoulder, 10-foot outside shoulder, and six-foot sidewalk; Intersection improvements at US 79, Carl Stern Drive, Uvalde Drive, Knowles Drive, Riverwalk Drive, and Great Western Drive. The project was expected to take approximately  24 months to construct. Access to Hutto High School was coordinated with Hutto ISD for the 2014-15 - 2015-16 school years.
