This one-of-a-kind historic preservation project sits as the crown jewel of Farley Street in Downtown Hutto. It took months of planning and prepping, 33-tons of custom-fit steel, meticulous work replacing existing steel and special perforated sides. Preserving the original structure was a complex undertaking, but we now this 6,500 square-foot symbol of Hutto history.
The Gin at the Co-Op District serves the Hutto community as an open-air event venue and marks the first step in the re-development of the 25-acre Co-Op property. By choosing to invest in the Gin, the City demonstrated its commitment to furthering the vision of the site as Hutto’s urban epicenter: a thriving town complex with civic space, retail opportunities and City Hall. With its tie to downtown, Old Town and newer sections of Hutto, the Co-Op is the heart of Hutto.
In 1938 when the Hutto Cooperative Gin Company was founded, farmers from across Hutto gathered to work and socialize. The Gin was not only a thriving business, it was the place to get news and share stories. The Gin is once again a gathering place for citizens to meet and attend events in the heart of historic Hutto. On November 20th, we invited some of the former Co-Op employees to see the new structure. Past foremen and employees gathered to take in the new space and reminisce about the sites working days. The Gin itself is a tangible representation of both our past and what the future will bring.
City staff is working hard to feature unique events at the Gin. “Like” us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and YouTube, and visit HuttoTX.gov frequently to stay up-to-date on Co-Op opportunities. The location is also available for private events. Go to VisitHutto.com to learn more.
